Drips and goo

We get closer to the finished sign. The board has been cut and painted, but still needs the wiring and arduino installed. The black dribble looks good with the letters, but the shape of the goo isn’t there yet. The goo is made from Gel coat, which we dribbled onto cling film and left to set. It takes quite a while to go off (in winter), so is time consuming to test. Another idea, not shown here, would be to make a “pink hairy skin dribble”. I like the idea that one of the letters is changing state in some way…

Earlier this year Lexhag and Paul McGuinness collaborated on a British monster flick. Below is a gallery of the creations. Paul is the poor sod inside the costumes. We created four creatures in total over a period of 3 months.

Our first Curcuit board

So, after the messy prototype that then broke, we decided to make it neater – a whole lot neater…

We set out to print our own circuit board using hacks that we found on the net. It all started with a circuit design that was translated from the prototype into a vector art app, which was then printed onto treated paper using a laser printer. We then transferred the print onto copper covered fiberglass and put it through an etching process that removes the negative areas of the design, leaving only the circuit tracks. It was a lot of fun and took a few designs to get it right. Although very simple in design, the final circuit works very well. Check the sweet Lexhag Logo…

The meat goes electro!

So, we are closer to our goal. The A is starting to glow. The electronics have been prototyped, very crudely, but it works! The arduino and the IR sensor are married in harmony on a bread board. We have LED’s of all flavors and are in the process of testing what looks good.

The first version of code has been written, which works. I think we have a few more versions to go through as we finesse the electronics and work out the distances involved. Starting to come together!

Meaty A!

The letter A is to be our interactive effort. It is made with a translucent silicone skin, complete with veins and will be rear lit with red LED’s. The idea is simple – the closer you get to the letter the more the meat glows. It will be controlled by the Arduino – code, electronics and prototyping will be pictured soon.

For now we have some images of the sculpt, mold and casting. Hairs will be punched at a later date to finish it off!

Lexhag Sign Project…

Here at Lexhag we have been very busy over the summer. One project, self initiated, was to produce a company sign. The objective was to do two things:

Make a sign for the office that captures the company
Familiarise ourselves with the Arduino.

The only design brief we set was each letter must be made from a different material. First stage was to create the letters. We started by making some out of old metal; cutting and beating them into shape. We then employed our model making skills and created the following:

These images show the production of the L and X. The letter L was made to look like it was cut from plate Aluminum and will polish up to be shinny. The X just needs to be gorgeous looking. When the sign is mounted the X will sit on a bed of black, high gloss, liquid that will be set in dripping motion! How about that. More to come and future posts.

Yes, it seems to be true. Flight of the Navigator, a childhood classic, is being remade! No doubt with lots of CG and meaningless action. Hollywood really has run out of ideas.
